How to hide personal info in a screenshot before you share it

Updated

Screenshots and photos of documents often carry more than you meant to share: a phone number, an ID or card number, an address, a face, a QR code. Before posting or sending them, cover that information properly.

What to avoid

A semi-transparent highlighter or thin pen strokes can leave text readable once someone raises the contrast, and blur or mosaic on small text can sometimes be guessed. Use a solid, opaque box over anything private, and share a copy rather than the original.

Option 1: your phone's photo editor

Most gallery apps have a markup or drawing tool. If you use it, pick a solid shape or a fully opaque pen, cover each item completely, and zoom in to check the edges before you save.

Option 2: PhotoCleaner+

PhotoCleaner+ (our app) is made for this job. It suggests likely personal information, you review each box, and it exports a copy with solid masks — everything runs on your phone, nothing is uploaded.

  1. Open a photo, screenshot or PDF in PhotoCleaner+.
  2. Check the suggested boxes — phone numbers, emails, card numbers and similar text — and add your own by drawing.
  3. Move, resize or delete boxes until everything private is covered.
  4. Export the masked copy and share that. Your original is not changed, and saved copies carry no EXIF or GPS data.

Questions

Is blurring enough to hide a phone number?

Not always. Light blur on small text can sometimes be read or guessed. A solid, opaque mask is the safe choice.

Does PhotoCleaner+ upload my photos?

No. Detection and masking run on your phone, and your photos and documents are never uploaded.

Is it free?

Detection, editing and masking are free; you can export 3 times a day. Pro removes the daily limit and adds PDF export and printing, or a short ad lifts the limit for 24 hours.
