How to hide personal info in screenshots and PDFs on Windows

Updated

Screenshots and scanned documents often contain a phone number, an email, a card or ID number, an address or a face. Before you send or post them from your PC, cover that information so it can't be recovered.

Option 1: Snipping Tool

Recent versions of Snipping Tool on Windows 11 can hide email addresses and phone numbers in a screenshot through Text actions, and you can draw over anything else. Avoid the highlighter for this — it is semi-transparent — and use solid strokes that cover each item completely.

Option 2: PhotoCleaner+ for Windows

PhotoCleaner+ for Windows (our app) finds likely personal info in photos, screenshots and PDFs — phone numbers, emails, card numbers, IBAN, passport numbers, names, addresses, license plates, faces and QR codes — and exports a copy with solid masks. Everything runs on your PC; nothing is uploaded.

  1. Open a file, paste it with Ctrl+V, drag it onto the window, or right-click it in File Explorer and choose Clean with PhotoCleaner+.
  2. Review the boxes: click to turn one on or off, drag to move or resize, and draw your own over anything that was missed.
  3. Export the masked copy — save, copy, share, or save as PDF. Your original is never overwritten, and saved copies carry no metadata.

Free and Pro

Finding personal info is free and unlimited, and you can export 3 documents a day for free. Pro is a one-time purchase that removes the daily limit and adds PDF export and printing. There are no ads and no watermark.

Questions

Will it find every piece of personal info?

No tool can promise that. Detection is a starting point — always check the boxes before you export and draw over anything that was missed.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Detection, masking and export run on your PC, with no account and nothing uploaded.
