Android has one rotation setting for the whole phone. Some apps stay in portrait even with auto-rotate on, and others turn when you just lie down. If you want videos and games in landscape but chat and reading in portrait, you need a rule for each app.
What Android can do on its own
Auto-rotate in Quick Settings turns the screen with the phone, for every app at once. With it off, the screen stays put; on many phones a small rotate button then appears in the navigation bar when you turn the phone, so you can rotate just that once.
What Android cannot do is remember a different orientation for each app, and an app made for portrait only stays in portrait whatever the setting says.
Android 16 tablets and large screens
On Android 16, large screens such as tablets ignore the usual app rotation request — the same request a rotation app normally uses to force an orientation. Rotate+ detects this and switches to the system rotation setting automatically, so it keeps working there.
Set it up with Rotate+
Rotate+ (our app) forces the screen orientation for the whole phone or for each app, with one tap and no root.
- Install Rotate+ from Google Play, open it and allow "Display over other apps" when asked.
- Tap a mode — Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Upside down, Reverse landscape or Lock current. It applies right away to the whole phone.
- For per-app rules, allow Accessibility (or Usage access) when asked, then pick an app and its orientation — for example, landscape for a video app and portrait for chat.
- Open that app: the rule is applied when it opens and released when you leave.
When an app turns the screen back
Some apps set their own orientation again. Keep orientation puts your choice back, and stops trying if an app keeps fighting, so nothing loops.
For a one-off, Rotate once turns just the current app to the other orientation and releases by itself when you switch apps or turn the screen off. Two Quick Settings tiles, home screen widgets and app shortcuts keep it one tap away.
What is free, and what Pro adds
All rotation modes, Keep orientation, Rotate once, tiles, widgets and shortcuts are free, along with 3 per-app rules and a small banner ad. Pro adds unlimited per-app rules, conditions that change the orientation automatically (while charging, with headphones, a Bluetooth device, a car or desk dock, during a call or at set times), a floating rotate button and no ads.
